Performing Arts Centre
VECTORWORKS AND AUTODESK SKETCHBOOK
THE DESIGN IS OF A PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE LOCATED ON THE OLD BISHOPS PALACE IN LLANDAFF, CARDIFF. WITH SUCH A HISTORICALLY SENSITIVE SITE, THE DESIGN AIMED TO HONOR THIS WITH A MINIMAL IMPACT.
THIS LED TO AN OPTICAL REBUILD, IN WHICH WINDOWS WERE POSITIONED TO LOOK AT A SPECIFIC ASPECT OF THE RUINS, AND THEN OVERLAY AN OUTLINE DRAWING OF HOW THE RUINS ONCE LOOKED.
THIS THEN GAVE WAY TO THE REST OF THE PROGRAMME WHICH CONSISTS OF ADAPTABLE REHEARSAL SPACES, A COFFEE SHOP, AND AMENITIES ON THE GROUND FLOOR.
THE FIRST FLOOR WAS CONCEIVED AS A BEACON THAT HOVERED ABOVE THE SITE, FACING THE NEARBY CATHEDRAL. THIS FLOOR HOUSES THE MAIN PERFORMANCE SPACE, WORKSHOP SPACE, AND CHANGING FACILITIES.
EXTERNALLY, THE BUILDING REWORKS THE LANDSCAPING OF THE SITE AND UTILISES STACKED RECLAIMED SLATE TILES ON THE GROUND FLOOR AND CHARRED TIMBER ON THE FIRST FLOOR.
